A domain name is an address on the web and it helps people to find website on the internet. Just as homes and businesses have street addresses, all websites have web addresses called domain names. Your domain name is your identity on the web. It is your first impression to your web public and it will likely be the first thing about you that they will read, whether they got your domain name from your business cards, off a magazine ad, or from a search engine result page (SERP).

If you chose a domain name that is offensive to your target audience they may not enter your website at all. It is important to pick a domain name that does not turn people off, and most importantly you should choose a domain name with which you can market, sell and stand to look at all the time, because your domain name will be featured on your advertising, business card, website, emails, brochures and stationary. You need to be sure because you cannot afford to change your mind later on.

For example, I chose to register my name (Dean Chu) as this website's domain name, even though I realize that deanchu.ca doesn't offer the "search engine" benefits that a topical relevant domain name like internetwebsite.com would offer, such that, the website's keyword is in the domain name. However, registering my website domain name as deanchu.ca motivates me to perform well, because my name is literally attached to this project. This strategy plays a major part in shaping how I approach this website and determine the contents that I would permit to be shown. Since my name is attached to this website I have an urgency to succeed, for it is easier to take risk or perform poorly when you get to remain anonymous.
